Broadband Phone: Voice Over Internet Telephone Made Cheap & Easy

Do you want to make cheap Internet phone calls with VoIP, but are tired of always having to use your computer and headphones, or possibly your favorite messenger to make phone calls online? Thought about using a broadband phone company but not sure what you need or even if your technical aptitude is up to par with such techie computer gadgets? You’ll be surprised how easy installing broadband phone service really is.

No, you don’t need a degree in rocket science to hook up your broadband phone service, and after about 5 minutes or less of plugging in a few cords, you’ll be glad you took the time because broadband phone service is cheap. Dirt cheap! You’ll quite literally save hundreds on your phone bill each and every year, even if you don’t use long distance. Some broadband phone providers offer unlimited local, plus long distance for about half of what many traditional phone companies charge for local phone service alone.

You only need three things to use broadband phone service:

  • A broadband Internet connection like cable, or DSL.
  • Just a regular touch tone telephone like you have now.
  • A broadband telephone adaptor which normally is supplied with service.

If you have broadband Internet like cable, DSL, satellite, or even T1, there is no need to worry about the right kind of Internet connection or who your ISP is because it makes no difference as long as you have some form of broadband Internet. Dial-up Internet will not work, and if you’re using dial-up, but are considering saving money with broadband phone service you might want to do an online price quote at GetConnected.com for broadband Internet service since these days it can often times be as cheap or cheaper than dial-up.

No more headphones, microphones, messengers, software or even having your computer turned on to make cheap calls over the Internet! With a broadband phone service plan you can just pick up your telephone to make and receive telephone calls the same way you always have. You’ll also be able to take advantage of features like caller ID, voice mail, speed dialing, auto call back, plus advanced features your traditional phone company didn’t offer, like having voice mail sent to your e-mail or cell phone, or virtual phone numbers, even pick your area code so friends and family don’t get a long distance charge for calling you.

Not techie? You don’t have to be. Most broadband phone companies will send you a broadband phone adapter or DTA that you can install yourself in about five minutes or less. They even have online diagrams for those who want a visual interpretation, not to mention tech support. Just a few snaps of a couple wires, and sometimes a quick phone call and you’re on your way to money saving bliss. Still not convinced? Then just give that computer geek you know a call to help you set it up. Once you see it done, it’s so easy you’ll never forget.

So why is broadband phone service so cheap? Would it surprise you to know you’re traditional telephone company has been ripping you off for years? OK, so no big surprise there, but I’ll give you the low down anyway. Turns out broadband phone, and traditional phone services use the exact same grid for transferring phone calls. The Internet. The difference is your traditional phone company has been charging you to send your calls to that grid, where with broadband phone service your DTA, or broadband phone adapter handles that for you and doesn’t charge you a dime. You’re truly just paying for the service.

Broadband Phone: Are You Paying Extra And Getting Less?

There exists an abundance of service providers aggressively competing with one another in an attempt to win your business. Their offering great broadband phone services that you can use with that overpriced broadband Internet connection your already paying for. You can just imagine the plethora of plans their offering at very competitive rates, with features your probably not getting with your existing traditional phone company. In many cases, you can even keep your old phone number when you switch.

If your wondering, what a broadband phone is, you’ve come to the right place. It’s basically a phone that uses your internet connection to talk and listen over. You may have heard of something called “voice over internet protocol”, or VoiP for short. It’s the technology that converts your voice spoken into a phone into digital bits and bytes that can be understood by computers, and transmitted over the internet. The process, is of course reversed at the other end for the benefit of the person listening to your call.

Saving money is attractive to everyone, and is part of the many reasons that broadband phone services are so popular. Now before you get all gung-ho about this technology, there are a few pitfalls that should be considered. Some of these may or may not apply to you, so be sure to ask when shopping around. First of all, you need to have a high-speed internet connection. Anything less will provide sub par sound quality and usability. As with all things computer based, this technology is subject to hackers and virus attacks. Be sure to check on 911 and international call restrictions from any potential provider you may be considering.

While it’s great, that companies are providing plenty of broadband phone services, it would be foolhardy not to spend some time investigating and comparing the disparate packages being offered. Be sure to pay attention to the fine print. Vonage is one of the popular players in this marketplace, and they would be a great place to start looking. Be sure to consider cost of any new equipment you may require. BBTELSYS is another company providing broad phone services that you may want to consider.

Of course, with all emerging technologies, this one will be sure to get better in time. It’s been around for quite a few years, but just lately is beginning to achieve a critical mass. Also, there is the cool factor that applies to this tech. So if your one of those early adopters, or just a major geek, then you may have jumped on this bandwagon already. Otherwise, do your homework, and I’m sure you can find a deal that works for you.

Cheapest Internet and Phone Service

Do you still have landline phone service? Still stuck on dial-up Internet service because you think it’s cheaper than broadband? What if I said you can essentially get unlimited local plus long distance phone service and broadband Internet for the same price or less than what you’re paying for those so called cheaper services?

Ask yourself this: How much am I paying just for local phone service? Are you including all of the taxes fees and sir charges? If so, you’re probably paying fairly close to 50 dollars a month just in local phone service charges. Is it fair to say you pay at least 10 dollars a month in long distance including fees?

Either way you cut it, if you are paying more than 60 dollars for phone service each month you’re getting ripped off even if you think you’re getting a pretty good deal. How about dial-up ISP? Do you have one of those super cheap dial-up Internet providers that only charge around 10 dollars a month for ISP? Good deal right? Wrong!

Of course I can’t sit here and figure each persons monthly billing, but most of you reading this who have landline phone service, make long distance phone calls either by calling card, or a long distance plan, and use dial-up Internet service are likely paying at least 70 dollars or more per month between the three services.

What would you do if you could get high speed Internet, plus unlimited local plus long distance calling for that same 70 dollars? Would you just nod wisely and still keep your landline phone service and slow dial-up Internet? Would you keep swearing by the same cheap calling cards for long distance?

Did you know that most people in the U.S. can get broadband Internet either by cable or DSL for less than 50 dollars a month? Did you know that by having that broadband Internet service you can take advantage of unlimited local and long distance phone service for less than 20 dollars per month?

In effect, you could be getting super fast Internet connections and unlimited calling for the same price, and often times less than what you are paying for service right now. Even if it averages out to be about the same price, you’re still getting better service for the same amount of money!

Of course, more often than not, the combination of broadband Internet, and broadband phone service is cheaper than the cost of landline phone service plus the cost of dial-up. Sure, the price of broadband Internet alone is going to cost more than dial-up, but factor in the savings with broadband phone service and the combination of the two are going to be much cheaper than landline phone service plus dial-up.

Quite literally, the cheapest phone service or cheapest Internet service is going to be broadband Internet like DSL or cable broadband plus broadband telephone service. Try as you might, you just cannot get a better deal than that. You’ve always wanted to “stick it” to your phone company, and modern technology has finally provided you a way to do just that.

Broadband Phone Service is Not VoIP

Ever come across a site that claims broadband phone is also known as VoIP or vise verse? Or a web page that explains PC-to-phone is VoIP? How about Internet phone service? VoIP right? Wrong! VoIP is neither broadband phone, PC-to-phone or Internet phone service. It’s time to set the record straight once and for all.

VoIP is an abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP is a technology that makes such things as broadband phone service, PC-to-phone, and Internet phone service possible by using the Internet to send and receive phone calls. The technology is VoIP while the means are broadband phone or PC-to-phone and the like.

So now we know what broadband phone isn’t, I suppose this would be a good place to explain what it is, exactly. Broadband phone service as discussed before, uses VoIP technology to send and receive phone calls using your regular everyday household touch tone corded or wireless telephone.

Technically broadband phone service doesn’t even need your computer to work, you just need a broadband Internet connection, and both DSL or cable broadband will work. You’ll also need a broadband telephone adaptor to plug your phone line into instead of the usual wall jack. Pretty simple huh?

What broadband phone service allows you to do is bypass your telephone company, and connect your call directly to the same grid your phone company uses. Can you guess what that is? Right, the Internet. All this time your phone company has charged you just to connect your call to the Internet! What a rip off, right?

Now just wait, it gets better. So far Uncle Sam and the telcos have not been able to tax or collect on sir charges as had been the case for many years with your landline phone company. Right now additional charges are very minimal. Did you know that taxes and hidden fee’s can make up as much as 20% of your landline phone bill?

Now on to PC-to-phone service. PC-to-phone works in much the same way broadband phone works, but without an adapter. Instead you just need a headset or speakers and microphone and PC-to-phone software installed on your computer. You can use PC-to-phone to call someones phone from your computer, and sometimes people can even call your computer.

Now before you get excited, PC-to-phone is not free. The cent per minute rates are low for long distance, but you normally get charged the same amount for a local call. Whats worse, PC-to-phone services actually do no service for you at all. It uses the software that you downloaded and host on your computer to track your calls, and doesn’t cost them a penny when you make a call. You’re just paying for the software over, and over, and over again.

Internet phone service is just a vague term for broadband and PC-to-phone type services. So now that you know what VoIP is not, and what broadband phone service and PC-to-phone is, why are you still using that landline phone? Broadband phone service is without any doubt the cheapest phone service on the planet and is the best way to take advantage of VoIP technology. Not to mention, it finally gives you a way to “stick it” to your phone company.

Usefulness of Broadband Internet Access

Filed under: Voip Phones — ipcalls @ 3:16 pm

Broadband Internet is the American way when it comes to Internet service of choice. Americans love things that are bigger, faster and stronger. In the auto Industry we Americans are addicted to SUV’s. Our fast food places have our favorite giant burger, like the Big Mac, and the all American Internet service of choice is of course, broadband.

Though we prefer bigger and better, there are those who are content with small economy cars, a burger from the dollar menu, and dial up ISP. No, these people aren’t cheap, their frugal, and a wise group at that. In today’s economy it pays to pinch your pennies. Some people just aren’t impressed by high speed Internet since it cost’s more.

What the frugal may be unaware of is the usefulness of broadband Internet access can far outweigh the cost and even save you some money. Not just a little money, a whole lot of it! I know, you’re wondering how broadband can save money when it costs more than dial up ISP. In a word, technology. That’s right, put your broadband Internet to work.

Broadband Internet can save you money in ways you never thought possible, like gasoline and wear and tear on your automobile. Broadband Internet can even save you money on entertainment cost’s such as movie rentals, and music CD’s. Broadband Internet even saves you time wasted browsing online, and for some of us time is money.

How can broadband Internet save money on gas? Just think about this, how much money in gas does it cost you to go out and rent a movie on DVD from the rental store? Just one gallon is over 2 dollars. How much gas do you burn making that trip each year? How much rubber is worn off your tires and how many miles is added toward the next oil change?

With broadband Internet you can download your own movies. Some online movie rental stores charge you the same amount for 30 days as your local rental store charges for 24 hours! You can even download some movies for free and burn them to DVD. The same concept applies to things like movies and video games. The list is endless.

Did you know broadband Internet can save you a ton of money on phone service? If you have broadband cable or DSL you can take advantage of VOIP or voice over Internet protocol. VoIP also known as broadband phone service can cost as little as 15 dollars a month, and the big advantage to this is it offsets the higher cost of broadband Internet access immediately.

Even if dial up ISP were free, it could never save you any money and is hardly as useful as broadband. I am sure you can think of other ways to reduce your cost of living by using broadband. So to the frugal I say, keep your economy car, order from the dollar menu, but by all means, take advantage of the overwhelming usefulness of broadband Internet access. You’ll be glad you did.

The Cheapest Long Distance Service

Filed under: Voip — ipcalls @ 11:28 pm

No longer is the cheapest long distance service a matter of the lowest cent per minute rate. Long distance phone service now comes in the form of traditional cent per minute long distance, dialaround, calling cards, bundled phone service, and broadband phone, or VoIP, with unlimited minutes. Today, usage is far more important than rates.

Low cent per minute long distance rates with traditional phone service are good if you don’t expect to make many long distance phone calls. Keep in mind, you may be charged a fee by your phone company just to have this service on your line, even if you don’t use it. FCC, PIC, taxes, sir charges, and monthly fees are the most common hidden fees.

Dialaround long distance service is most commonly referred to as 1010 numbers, though some dialaround long distance providers offer an 800 access number instead. Dialaround long distance rates are typically slightly higher than a cent per minute plan on your phone line, but do not have as many, if any, hidden fee’s taxes or sir charges.

Calling cards are a cheap alternative to both dialaround and traditional long distance service. You can make long distance phone calls from any telephone and the rates can be very low. Calling cards are good for long distance when used in moderation. On most calling cards you’ll be charged a set amount of minutes each time you use it.

Bundled phone service can be a fairly inexpensive long distance plan if you make a lot of long distance phone calls and opt for unlimited minutes as the long distance portion of your calling plan. The only real draw back to a bundled phone service plan are those pesky hidden fees that can make up to 20% of your total bill, and sometimes more.

Broadband phone, or VoIP is literally the cheapest long distance service available today. Since broadband telephone uses the Internet to send and receive calls, there are no hidden fee’s taxes or surcharges associated with VoIP service. Unlimited local and long distance service for around $20.00 and a 3% federal excise tax is as cheap as it gets.

Clearly the winner for the cheapest long distance service is broadband phone or VoIP. If you must use traditional methods for making long distance phone calls, just try to avoid any hidden fee’s and go with the lowest cent per minute rate if you don’t make many calls. Go for unlimited minutes if you’ll be making a lot of long distance calls.

Getting Wired For VoIP

Filed under: Voip — ipcalls @ 11:26 pm

You finally made the switch to broadband phone service. The friendly neighborhood UPS guy just came by with the DTA adapter you’ll need to start using your new VoIP service. Soon the wheels in your head begin to turn as you realize your VoIP router is only connected to one telephone. You want VoIP phone service in your whole house, don’t you?

Getting wired for VoIP in your whole house is fairly simple. You don’t need a degree in rocket science, though it does take a bit more of a hands on approach than just letting the telephone company switch you over, but is also more rewarding. Along with a much cheaper phone bill, your friends will think you are some kind of computer genius.

Installing your VoIP system is really pretty easy, and for the most part all VoIP adapters install the same way. If you have a wireless network router, just think of your Internet connection as running from your modem, through your VoIP adapter first, then through your wireless router, and finally out to your computer. Consult your install guide.

If you do not have a wireless router, then your Internet connection comes from your cable, or DSL modem, through your VoIP adapter, and out to your computer. In either case, plug in your telephone line and finally power everything up. Be patient as this can take a few minutes to propagate the first time you connect. See your owners manual.

The easy way to get your whole home wired for VoIP is to buy a wireless whole house VoIP phone system with the VoIP router already built into the telephone. Broadband telephone companies like Packet8 offer these phones at a discount when you sign up for service and continue to sell additional compatible wireless handsets as needed.

Another approach is to run the phone cord from your VoIP adapter that would normally plug into your telephone, out to your network interface box outside, commonly referred to as the phone box. Unplug the phone companies line and plug in your own. This will connect all the phone jacks in your home to the VoIP Service.

When you wire your home for VoIP with the network interface box, make sure to put up a sign to insure the telephone company does not plug their line back in. If they do, it could damage your VoIP adapter. If you have a newer home, you may already be equipped with a system to connect your broadband phone service to the whole house.

Cheapest Solution in VoIP Broadband Phone Service

Filed under: Voip — ipcalls @ 11:21 pm

VoIP is an abbreviation for voice over Internet protocol. It is easy to confuse VoIP with broadband phone service. Though broadband phone service uses the voice over Internet protocol to send and receive phone calls, it is not actually VoIP. As of now, VoIP basically comes in three forms, PC-to-PC, PC-to-Phone, and Broadband telephone service.

You may have used the most common PC-to-PC or PC-to-phone VoIP services without even realizing it. Have you ever used Yahoo Messenger to call someones computer? If you have, you’ve used Yahoo’s free PC-to-PC VoIP service. Additionally, Yahoo Messenger allows you to call someones home telephone from your computer for a small fee. This is called PC-to-Phone VoIP.

Broadband phone service also uses VoIP but allows you to make and receive calls on your home telephone the same way you always have. While PC-to-Phone, and PC-to-PC only require a software download to use the service, you’ll need a broadband phone adaptor to be able to use your home telephone with VoIP. Once installed, broadband phone service is very much like a traditional land line with just a few exceptions.

Now we know VoIP is the means of transmitting voice data over the Internet, and PC-to-Phone, PC-to-PC, or broadband telephone are the VoIP hardware and software solutions for VoIP. Armed with that information, which is the cheapest solution in VoIP for you? Free VoIP is not always the cheapest solution in VoIP. Let me explain.

As mentioned before, PC-to-PC VoIP is often times free with Popular Instant Messenger clients such as Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and now, Google Talk. These messengers provide an excellent free service which allows you to talk to friends and family over long distances through your home computer and speakers or headset.

What if you need to call someones home telephone or business phone? That’s where PC-to-Phone Voip comes in. PC-to-Phone allows you to call a telephone from your computer. Though PC-to-Phone isn’t free it’s very cheap, sometimes around 1 cent per minute or less. Examples of Popular PC-to-Phone VoIP services are offered by Yahoo Messenger and Skype.

Broadband telephone service allows you to make and receive phone calls without the aid of you’re computer. Broadband telephone is hyper popular since it cuts out the telcos and dramatically reduces your phone bill. Some VoIP companies offer unlimited local plus long distance calling for a flat fee of less than 20 dollars per month.

As with anything else, the cheapest solution for VoIP is going to be determined by your usage of the service. If using your computer to talk with your contacts does not bother you, by all means use PC-to-PC or PC-to-Phone. If you want to reduce your phone bill, and enjoy the convenience of talking on a normal phone, broadband telephone is going to be the cheapest solution in VoIP.

Do You Have Your VoIP/BroadBand Phone Yet?

Filed under: Voip — ipcalls @ 11:18 pm

Broadband VoIP allows you to add a phone line to your home or office with a local phone number in just about any major U.S. city…. and with some vendors also in several countries such as the UK and Israel.

Here are some ways Businesses and families with geographical distances between them can take advantage of BroadBand Phone/VoIP:

1. Parents can add an additional line with a local number so their college son or daughter can always call home without the expense of long distance rates.

2. A family in Florida can bring up a local number in Minnesota where the rest of the family resides. Family members in Minnesota now dial a local number and reach the relatives in Florida with no long distance charges because the call is local for those in Minnesota, and only the party in Florida needs to have broadband service to receive the calls.

3. This technology can also help military families stay connected. VoIP is not restricted by global boundaries. A U.S. soldier in another country with a broadband connection can set up service with unlimited in bound calls that are local to his family in the U.S. His family then can make unlimited calls to him at no cost and his family in the U.S. doesn’t need to have broadband access. Plus any calls they make home are either “local” or are made with an unlimited flat rate plan. That saves a ton of money.

4. Traveling executives can also take advantage of VoIP as a portable phone that can be taken along on any business trip. Many hotels will provide broad band access today. Simply plug the IP phone into the broadband connection in the hotel room. Your family and customers can now call on a local number. In addition you can still take advantage of out bound service and make calls from the room as well.

5. Businesses can drastically reduce costs from traditional calling services…. with flat rate plans which cover all of the US & Canada and often including Europe &/or Asia also.

For an easy way to compare available VoIP phone options in your area (US only) browse through the vendor review info available at Broadband Reports. This info is updated frequently with new input from their Forum members. Be advised that not all providers may be included as only those having received a member review will be listed.
